AG’s Office “Looks Into” Sinunu Allegations

The big news in the Santa Clara DA’s race this week was that the office is investigating the dismissal of a 1997 drug case supervised by Karyn Sinunu. On Wednesday, the state attorney general’s office revealed that it, too, is looking into the case.

Sinunu, the No. 2 person in DA George Kennedy’s office, oversaw the narcotics unit in 1997. Several local attorneys, including retired Assistant DA Alvin Weger, said this week they were recently interviewed by Kennedy investigators, who were asking a lot of pointed questions about the 1997 case. Still no word on why the investigation is under way just weeks before the June 6 primary. Kennedy and Sinunu have not returned repeat calls for comment.

Of the four candidates to replace Kennedy, three are currently in the DA’s office.

The attorney general’s office said today that it is “looking into” allegations that Sinunu flushed a case despite strong evidence, but wouldn’t provide any details.
